Mission in Motion is the employee engagement program at Medtronic. My involvement encompassed many aspects of this program from web design consultation to creative direction for photography, brochures, displays, wearables and signage. Let's say, no stone was left unturned. The client wanted to minimize budget for photoshoot, so I trained them to do the model sourcing, scheduling, wardrobe propping etc. The mission in motion program was very successful, and promotion was a big part of that success.
A couple of years after this branding of the Mission in Motion program, Medtronic launched a new brand.
The key premise of the rebranded Mission in Motion program is "i am mission in motion", giving the participants in the program a feeling of belonging and being a foundation of Mission in Motion.

Medtronic Headquarters, Tokyo
Our Medtronic Corporate Creative team was invited to create a new work environment for the Medtronic Tokyo office. We began this project in Minneapolis and collaborated with Gensler who did the architectural work, our team focused on the environmental branding. Environmental photos show the results of this project.
My role was creative direction of the environmental branding. I worked closely with the project manager and our design team to realize the vision for this space.
Our process began working with Gensler and the Tokyo team reviewing proposed floor plans to discover opportunities for the branding within the office space.
Next our team developed ideas on the content of materials for these areas, with proposed graphic content. In Tokyo, we proposed these ideas to management with visual recommendations while touring the facility that was barely built out.
The Tokyo Medtronic employees had a strong desire to be connected with the "mother ship", Medtronic headquarters, and the company's rich history. Although this direction was surprising, we fulfilled their wishes and combined Medtronic historical imagery with Japanese imagery, giving a good balance to the environment.
The first three images highlight the finished facility. Other imagery shows the work process, and some of the actual graphics.
The Medtronic historical images were used on cabinet wraps for huge file cabinets in a room specifically dedicated to storage. The cabinets were floor to ceiling with an additional row of cabinets behind the first row. Access to the second row was by moving the hinged first row.
Management reported that employee morale and company loyalty was much higher once the employees moved to this new facility.
Medtronic Lobby, Mounds View
Display cases highlighting Medtronic product and a large mural wall.
Close up of Mounds View display case, with examples of the background graphics for each case.
Created a highly engaging and mobilizing experience for visitors exiting the “Body Worlds” exhibit at the Science Museum of Minnesota. Included a large display pertaining to potential personal health goals.
Visitors were able to collect postcards, and remove a re-positionable sticker to remind them of their personal health goals. The sticker could be placed on the refrigerator, or a mirror, or on a car dashboard, anywhere it would be a constant reminder for the viewer.
An electronic counter collected information as to which health goals were top of mind for the audience.
Summer Lights Packaging
Light and airy like a summer breeze, lights as flower petals.
Pure and Simple
Concept for a line of products for Pamida stores that consisted of backer cards and hang tags. The intent of the packaging was to complement the natural qualities of the product line.
Target Light Packaging
At Seasonal Specialties, the design department did a lot of concept work to pitch to our clients. This concept was developed by a creative director who left the company, and we felt this idea was too strong to leave behind. My role as art director once this design was selected by Target was to further define and document the method of digital illustration so that this treatment could be produced on over 100 sku's by our production artists. As well I oversaw the quality and consistency of the application.
Tree and Lights Catalog
A high end catalog to highlight a selection of artificial holiday trees. Includes a metal embossed cover, vellum introductory pages and a navigation system on each page.
A multitude of experience with photo art direction, from product to lifestyle to storytelling. Comfortable in studio as well as on location, scouting for the perfect location, selecting models, prop seeking, all to tell the story in a glance.
The first three portraits were a pro bono project for the Minnesota Brain Injury Alliance. They held an annual event at their headquarters in NE Minneapolis during the "Art a Whirl". A group of us worked together to transform their warehouse space into an art gallery where people with strokes or brain injuries exhibited their work. The festivities included a muralist painting throughout the weekend, the artwork, and large prints of black and white portraits with a biography of each individual.
I worked with photographer and make-up artist who donated their time to bring out the true essence of each of the individuals' personality.
Following the portraits are images for 3M Health Care, and lifestyle photography for the launch of a new Medtronic brand website.
Medtronic Foundation Annual Report
Creative direction for the Medtronic Foundation Annual Report required a strong vision and drive to personalize this piece that had been over-sized, and utilized stock photography for years. Included location scouting for photography, photo art direction both locally and remotely. Creative direction and mentoring of designer to produce a well positioned piece for the Medtronic Foundation.
Medtronic Foundation - new branding
With the launch of new branding for Medtronic, the Medtronic Foundation followed suit. The Foundation retained its essence through the use of muted earth tones, while incorporating the Medtronic brand elements. My roles in this project included concepting, design and production.
